Ahaha. Turtle-speed podficcing as ever. Beta thanks again to [personal profile] crinklysolution, who rocks and is patient with me.

Title: When the Reckoning Arrives (Part 3)
Author: [personal profile] dira
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga
Pairing: Aral/Cordelia - Aral/Jole discussed
Length: 0:30:37
Size: 28 Mb
Temporary Link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/s7an7i
Summary: Arkady's gotten used to ImpSec the way a soldier gets used to being surrounded by deadly weapons.

This time the (very apt) title comes from the Mountain Goats' song Heretic Pride from the album of the same name.

Reader's notes

Arkady Jole kinda rips my heart out in this one. I am so invested now. It's ridiculous.

That aside, it was a hard part to record just from a technical standpoint and I'm still not a hundred percent pleased with it. The long dialogue of the interrogation was challenging, juggling Simon and Jole and Jole's internal monologue.

Simon Illyan is brilliant in this fic, and his bits are the some of the ones I'm least certain about. There's so much that we know about him that Jole doesn't, and I really think Dira brings that out. Hopefully it still comes through. I feel like I was getting him sometimes and his voice would be distinct from Jole's and properly characterized and then other times he would slip away from me.

The fast penta addled lines of thought were a lot of fun to read, but again, not sure how they turned out. I think sometimes my brain turned 'drugged' into 'sort of out of breath'.

Also, the word 'ImpSec' is ridiculously hard to say, man. Especially once you start getting self-conscious about it. I have listened to the audiobooks for a lot of the Vorkosigan Saga novels and I have brand new respect for the narrator Grover Gardner after this. (They're excellent, in my opinion, I respected him a ton already).

On the other hand, this part has been an amazing way to feel inside Arkady's head. [personal profile] dira has counted the total number of words in canon where Lt. Jole is mentioned, and it's not a whole ton (though what words they are!), so she's built him pretty much from scratch and this fic is the first time we get his point of view (and y'know, his first name). And it does not go half-way. The backstory is really cool, and Jole just feels so, I dunno. I just want to give the boy a hug. Hell, I want someone to give me a hug.

Update on the next part, Everything You Can Keep

Taking a page from [personal profile] dira's book, I'm gonna try to track my progress on this one, in the hopes of finishing some time this century.

Sections recorded: 5 of 13
Sections edited: 5 of 13 (go me!)
Words read: 7607 / 30344
Total edited time: 47:17 / around 3 hours (if we're assuming 5000 words equals 30 mins, so in reality it'll probably be a little less)

One of the awesome things about recording Horseshoes and Hand Grenades was that it was all broken down into parts in the text and it forced us to record it in small chunks so we could reassemble the different characters and the sound clips. And that actually made the recording and editing process really really easy, so I've tried to do the same thing here.

There are horizontal lines at scene breaks throughout the text, and I've just called those each a new section and I'm recording each as a separate audacity file, to be reassembled at a later date. The downside is that there will definitely be some difference in recording conditions and style from part to part, but we'll see how bad that is. Anyway, I doubt I could have recorded the whole thing in one sitting, so at least this way any shifts in sound will hopefully happen at logical break points. Also, I'm following [personal profile] crinklysolution suggestion of trying to edit each section once I've recorded it, which has been a huge, huge help. So far so good, we'll see how things go.
