So, the amazingluzula organised this group cast podfic of omphale's Horseshoes and Hand Grenades and the lovely crinklysolution invited me to be a part of it and we generally had an amazing time and the finished product is pretty darn cool if I do say so myself.

luzula read Benton Fraser, crinklysolution read Ray Kowalksi, I read Ray Vecchio and helens78 read Frannie and a bunch of other cool stuff. Luz, with crinkly's help, found the sound and music snippets for the section dividers, which are amazing. Plus then podfic_lover did a wicked podbook thing for it with the images from the original fic as section covers. So, so much fun to work with an awesome team on something like this.
I've never done a collaborative podfic and wow, I would do that again in a heartbeat. It really helped with motivation and it was so great to have a bunch of really talented people who were just as psyched about the podfic as I was. As the least experienced podficcer of the bunch, I also felt like I was getting some great advice and support, which was wicked. And yeah, the whole cast of people for different characters aspect was something I really liked.
It was really really cool to get to be Vecchio in this. I have definitely always felt like he was the one I had less of a grasp on. In 'Year in the Life', his parts were always harder to nail down than Kowalski's, and I was never really sure I had gotten them right. But in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades I feel like I kinda got inside his head. He's a little older, a little more self-aware than the others, I think, and I loved that about him. And I love his snark and his resignation.
And yeah, I bawled my eyes out when I listened to the whole thing the first time through, because I had just gotten so attached. Never mind that I knew it was coming, obviously. Never mind that I knew what was coming by the end of the first section the very first time I read the fic (great fic-reading moment of realization : I know that song, I know how this ends, they want me to read that guy, oh holy god).
I somehow had not read this fic before getting invited to join the project, so it was also my introduction to that, too. It's such a neat historical scrapbook of a fanfiction. Omphale is a brilliant writer and researcher, and the art to go with the story is really cool. I think the snippets of sound that Luz and crinkly found to put between the parts really did a lot to bring that aspect of it to life.
Also, I have been a giant fan of Luz's since I first started listening to podfic, so this is a bit of a ridiculously cool thing to happen to me.

The Cry Cry Cry version (included at the end of the podfic) is totally awesome, and is the one most people know. But I grew up in southern Alberta and James Keelaghan was my favourite musician in the whole wide world between the ages of about 7 and about 12, so his will always hold a special place in my heart.
