This is my very first one, and I'm not entirely sure of the recording set-up yet, but I think it turned out okay. Appologies to Sapote for the, I dunno, eight months it took me to get around to finishing this and posting it.

Yay Podfic!
One of the things that I think is cool about fanfic is the sort of folk story aspect of it that some people have talked about. About collective creation of narratives, how things alter with each telling, with each teller. And especially, how we tell stories about our lives, experiences, ideas, values etc. using common reference points, common characters. Fic that stays close to cannon can do this using themes that the author wants to explore, elements they emphasize. With an AU, a writer can explore different worlds, environments (des champs [fields], in a Bourdieu way - god, I'm a theory geek). Sometimes you can really tell that an author is writing about a 'field' that they are at home in, incorporating their narratives into the story and I think that's totally cool.
This, I think is one of the first times that I've read something and thought that this is recounting a narrative that is mine, that resonates directly with my experience, that is telling a story I need told. I mean, I identify with academic narratives for sure, but it's not the same. Not sure why. Maybe because I've read stuff like that outside of fanfiction, so it's not as striking, maybe because I don't feel as much need to have that story told. Written by the Victors was maybe as exciting, because seriously, everyone can use a reminder of the subjectivity of history and it was just so brilliantly done.
Basically, this story really touched me, and at the same time really made my sociological/anthropological brain start ticking about why it was so cool that someone had written it.
