More podfic! Two whole podfics!

Parts 1 and 2 of Dira Sudis' awesome series The World That You Need.

I hope to do the whole series, we'll see how that goes, but I definitely have a few of the later parts done recording and just in need of polishing, so I think I'm off to a good start. Giant thanks to [personal profile] crinklysolution for beta listening to these even though she wasn't familiar with the source material (wasn't - note the past tense - mwhahahaha!), and of course to Dira for letting me record these.

Summary: It had been years since they'd had a proper culture-clash fight.

Even if you haven't read the Vorkosigan books (and, really, what are you waiting for? Seriously, they're that good.) I think this might be worth a listen. Dira's fantastic characters and relationships have a way of getting you invested, even if the characters in question are complete strangers to you.

Further notes
This series was the first contact I ever had with the Vorkosigan Saga, and it entirely Dira's fault that I ever read any of the books, so she has my endless gratitude for that as well.

I could go on and on and on about this series (and lets not kid ourselves, I probably will) but I guess what gets me the most about it is that it really shows how the characters don't all need or want the same things. People are different. They can want different things and that's okay. In fact, it can be awesome. Maybe scary, but ultimately, awesome.

It's such a beautiful description of polyamory in that sense. It's about trying to create relationships based not on what social context demands (although, obviously, they are affected by the context) nor necessarily on a rejection of those demands, but rather on the things the actual people involved in those relationships actually want from each other. And hopefully being lucky enough to have those wants line up.

I think my favourite part of these first two fics, and possibly my favourite part of the whole series, is when Cordelia has her realization in As you Tap on the Glass of how much she wants someone to share with. First off, it is brilliantly written and it makes a lot of sense for her character. And also, the first time I read it I just had this awesome moment of recognition, like - yes! absolutely, I know that feeling, that is just what it feels like. So so great.

Title Music
Despite a certain temptation, I ended up deciding not to even try to include the title songs in the podfics (esp. since the main one only exists on youtube).

But - for your reference and enjoyment (and as an excuse to have more Mountain Goats in my journal) here is the youtube link for the song that As You Tap on Your Glass and Fingers in the Notches on Your Spine come from (as does, for that matter The World That You Need).

Two-headed Boy as covered by John Darnielle (with a bunch of the words wrong - and his adorable apology for it)

I had never actually listened to Two-headed Boy before (or for that matter any Neutral Milk Hotel), so I didn't know the original version of it and had to go look it up - this has been a fun way to learn about it.

But yes, [personal profile] dira says that this is version that many of the titles in this series come from. So that's why they don't quite match up to the actual lyrics.

Also titled from this song is that one Torchwood crossover she wrote where Aral meets Jack Harkness in bar. (If you haven't yet - You know you want to.)
